“You’re ready, Eedoo.” These are the first words of Pepe, Eedoo’s grandfather, when he made the telephone call that became a life changing event for Eedoo. Eedoo is a protagonist in Werner Voets’ riveting novel titled “The Truth? A Paranormal Journey”. But in my view Pepe is the main protagonist, for without his presence there would be no story to tell.
“You are ready.” These are powerful words. They speak volumes. When reading Pepe’s words I had the feeling that Eedoo’s life was a preparation for this moment. It was his “special” moment. From this point on his life began to change dramatically, and kept changing as the relationship with his grandfather unfolded. In a sense, the texts (The Truth) that Eedoo is introduced to in the story would be worthless pieces of paper without the presence of Pepe. The reality that the texts point to take on life, or, better said, the content of the text became ‘flesh’ in the life of Pepe.
Pepe instructs his grandson, now his pupil that he will need to provide the proof for himself. “I can’t really explain it" he tells him. “You’ll have to experience it by yourself …. First you should consider whether you’re really willing to find proof. Your whole life will be turned upside down. Nothing will ever be the same again. Are you willing and ready to kiss your cosy little life goodbye and discover The Truth?”
I am assuming that this is why the author places a question mark in the title of his book. After all, it is the reader who will determine whether the content of the text is indeed The Truth. This will be an individual matter.
