My friend James is a retired physician, and it seems to me that he has always had a beautiful spiritual side to his life. Recently he wrote a short piece relating to the subject of loving yourself that I think is important to read and consider. These are the words of James:
Many years ago I was working with a patient who was visualizing his T cells as
being hammerhead sharks which he was sending to attack and devour his cancer
cells. One time when he was with me I asked him to do his visualization so I
could feel his process and how he was going. He did this and then opened his
eyes and said that he had the most remarkable experience.
One of the sharks had turned and looked at him and said:
"Stop, wait and listen. Every one of us, every cell in your body is created with
a function to perform, the capacity to perform that function and the ability to
decide whether to perform it or not. When we perform the function for which we
were created we are fulfilled and when we are fulfilled, we are filled with joy.
Now watch."
It then moved to a group of cancer cells and chomped them up. Having done that
it stepped back and bowed to the debris of the cancer cells and said:
"You were performing the function for which you were created and I am performing
the function for which I was created. I love you."
Then it said to my friend:
"All you need to do to assist us to perform our function is to love yourself.
When you do every one of us, every cell in your body will be in love and more
easily able to perform our function. Then we will be fulfilled and you will
feel our joy."
This was a very profound experience for both of us. I offer it for you to make
of it what you will.
