Consider this: I have not required a passport since 1970 when I traveled to Europe and the Middle East. And I have never been on a long flight of 14 hours. The preparations for this trip have taken me out of my comfort zones. Back when I was first offered this opportunity I hesitated; in fact for a time I even turned down the invitation. Imagine that - turning down a trip to the land of Oz! But I did, for a time ... even after I applied for a new passport.
Recently I purchased a new suitcase. Nowadays they have 4 wheels on the bottom and a nifty pull-out handle to lug around the airport. It's not big, though; I'm planning on traveling light. Plus, it is remarkably light weight. Has to be ... I'm just not as strong as I once was. After I check this in at the airport, I'll have a small backpack for my 'carry on'. Did they have words like this back in 1970? I don't really remember.
With the help of friends who are seasoned travelers I'm creating a check list of things to do and items to take on this trip. Only three things have been done (I have the flight tickets; verified where I am going at the LA Airport to catch my connecting flight to Australia; and confirmed that my suitcase will be checked in at the airport in Phoenix all the way through to Oz.) Seasoned travelers apparently don't worry about such things; but a seasoned traveler I am not.
29 sleeps to go. In my humble opinion, quite an adventure for this 78 year-old man. I can do it ... yes I will.
To all my Aussie friends: I am coming to visit you in the month of May.
